Accessibility
We want Tangled Alibis to be playable by as many people as possible.
Our commitment
Tangled Alibis is designed as a social, in-person party game. We use the accessibility features built into iOS, Android, and modern web browsers so players can use the assistive technologies they already rely on.
What we support
- System text size. The app respects your device's font size settings. The shared display is sized to be readable from across a room.
- Color and contrast. The default theme uses a warm, light background with text that meets the WCAG AA 4.5:1 contrast ratio, including secondary text. Game status is never conveyed by color alone: the selected vote target and selected theme carry a text badge, eliminated players are labeled "OUT" and struck through, and the current Investigator is named in words.
- Screen reader and VoiceOver/TalkBack support. Every button, link, text field, and vote or theme option has an accessible role, label, and state (selected, disabled, busy). Each phase change (story, discussion, vote, reveal, game over) is announced, along with the current Investigator, so a player who cannot see the shared screen still knows what is happening and whether it is their turn. Errors and connection notices are announced as they appear. Headings are marked so you can jump between sections, and decorative avatars and icons are hidden from the screen reader.
- Join without typing. The shared screen shows a large QR code and a four-letter room code, so players can join by scanning or by entering a short code. Scanning pre-fills the code; the room code is read letter by letter to screen readers, and the QR code itself is labeled with the room it joins.
- No audio required. The display screen can read the premise aloud on supported browsers, but it is optional. The game can be played with no sound.
- Touch target size. Buttons, text fields, and vote targets are at least 48 points tall; small text links have an enlarged tap area so they meet the same minimum. No gesture, long-press, or precision drag is ever required.
- Deliberate destructive actions. Eliminating a player is a two-step select-then-confirm flow, and the confirm button states the consequence, so an accidental tap cannot vote someone out.
Known limitations
- The shared TV/display is primarily visual, but it never carries information a player cannot also read on their own phone. We keep its text large and use clear contrast.
- The discussion countdown updates every second and is intentionally not announced by screen readers to avoid constant interruptions. The end of discussion is announced when the vote begins.
- Some theme content may include references to visual or speech cues as part of the fiction; the game mechanics themselves do not depend on a particular sense.
Conformance
The web portion of Tangled Alibis aims to conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Because the game is a real-time multiplayer experience, some Web Content Accessibility Guidelines may apply differently to the interactive game surfaces than to the marketing and legal pages.
